Each year, there are over 100 workplace fatalities as a result of industrial fire incidents. Fires continue to be a great issue and concern for workplace safety as fires can be started through accident or arson. Fire prevention in the workplace starts with the employer not only training their team on what to do in the event of a fire, but methods to prevent fires and location of fire extinguishers. Under OSHA regulation 29 CFR 1910.39, employers must have a fire prevention plan in place that includes: a list of all major fire hazards, proper handling and storage procedures for hazardous materials, potential ignition sources and their control, and the type of fire protection equipment necessary to control each hazard; procedures to control flammable and combustible waste materials; procedures for regular maintenance of safeguards; the names and titles of the employees responsible for maintaining the equipment to prevent fires; and the names and titles of the employees responsible for the control of fuel source hazards.1

These micro-learning clips are designed to help learners understand what are the causes of industrial fires, what are the flammable materials in the workplace, what are the different classes of fires, how to properly extinguish fires, how to hand flammable materials safely, what are the other fire potential hazards, what are the major causes of industrial fires and effectiveness of fire alarm and an evacuation plan. Fire prevention is a pillar to workplace safety and it all starts with understanding the triggers to fires.
